Another long weekend, another listicle from this millennial sitting and typing this while drinking my 4th bottle of beer instead of working my ass off to pay for my 99 year HDB. So, why the title?
1. Because i'm typing this at 6PM
I knocked off at 4.30PM today. On the Friday before the long weekend, I was the last person in my team to leave the office, being the stereotypical hardworking Asian I am. And I've already had a nap, and on my fourth beer. About to go out for more.
2. The land of opportunity
I've never been told how dumb I am, unlike in Singapore. Here, even if you fuck up in one state, you just move to another city, try again. Nobody cares, and nobody asks for your O Level or PSLE results, or whether you went to Normal Academic or Express when you're applying for a graduate position at 35.
3. Income, inequality, and purchasing power
I could quote some statistics, GDP, GSP, indexes and the gini coefficient and shit, and sound really smart, and maybe even throw in some graphs to sound even smarter but this fucking beer isn't going to drink itself. At the end of the day, ask anyone who's moved how much they are suffering because chicken rice costs $15 at a restaurant and how they have to pay 40% tax (not true) and stuff that you can ONLY find specifically in Singapore is REALLY expensive (well duh, its Australia, remember) and we'll explain to you how stuff here is usually cheaper, especially if you DIY and take out the labour costs. After we finish laughing, and once I'm sober from that $10 bottle of wine, that is.
4. We own our houses and cars
Enough said. Here's a picture of what a satki black vios looks like. (yes i know it's red and its not a vios, thanks captain)
"The 2017 Toyota 86 is on sale now, priced from$30,790 plus on-road costs. Prices have risen on all models between $300-800 for the new year.Nov 22, 2016"
5. As said by the only female on our blog:
"Because of the culture that no one really cares, if you are LGBT or a single mum or have 20 kids from 20 different fathers, no one really gives a damn. There is no such thing as you must get married before 30 years old and then go and queue for a BTO or buy a resale from HDB kinda standard protocols. If you are single at 40 and renting, no one will say anything. If you are married at 18 with 3 kids, saddled with mortgage and had 20 boyfriends before, no one really cares either. Feel free to move in with your partner (can be of any gender) and you can live like a proper couple without much discrimination."
She couldn't have said it better. People are too busy worrying about AFL scores and whether the barbecue is overcooked to give a shit. Singaporeans tend to grossly overestimate how much of a shit other people give about them.
That's all folks. Now, we are going to wallow in our miserable, $15 chicken rice lives while we await people telling us how naive we are and how the grass is greener on the other side, and how Singapore is lumber one.
